Conversations About Race

Conversations About Race
It is difficult to talk about race. We don’t always feel we have the language to speak about race well, when interacting with people of other races and ethnicities. We believe that the local church ought to be a place where people – regardless of race – can come together to worship, fellowship, and become friends together. We say each time we gather around the Communion Table that everyone is welcome. Yet we know that disparities exist in our community around race. University UMC hopes these conversations will serve to give language to our common struggle and inspire us to live in ways that will help our church fully reflect the Kingdom of God in all of its color-full diversity.
According to a recent study, Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools has the second largest achievement gap between black and white students in the country. CHCCS has the fifth largest achievement gap between Hispanic and white students in the country. This is one of the most significant areas of inequity since the integration of schools that has remained a persistent area of struggle in Chapel Hill and Carrboro. We invite you to come and bring friends to this Sunday’s presentation by Mr. Charles Rotramel, CEO of Houston reVision. Mr. Rotramel will discuss educational justice, achievement gaps, the school to prison pipeline, and offer ideas about meaningful interventions that make a difference in schools.
