“Prelude in B♭ Major” Johann Sebastian Bach

Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth.
Worship the LORD with gladness; come into God’s presence with singing.
Know that the LORD is God. It is God that made us, and we belong to God;
We are God’s people, and the sheep of God’s pasture.
Enter God’s gates with thanksgiving, and the courts with praise.
Give thanks to God, bless God’s name.
For the LORD is good; God’s steadfast love endures forever,
And God’s faithfulness to all generations.

Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
in light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise.

Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might;
thy justice like mountains high soaring above
thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love.

To all, life thou givest, to both great and small;
in all life thou livest, the true life of all;
we blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree,
and wither and perish, but naught changeth thee.

Thou reignest in glory; thou dwellest in light;
thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight;
all laud we would render: O help us to see
’tis only the splendor of light hideth thee.

Loving God, we pray that you will comfort us in our times of suffering. Lend wisdom and skill to those you call along side us to be part of our healing journey. Give us such confidence in the power of your grace, that even when we are afraid, we may put our whole trust in you. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Bound for the Kingdom”     from The Sacred Harp arr. by Stephen Andrews
                                                 Chancel Choir

Lord, open our hearts and minds by the power of your Holy Spirit, that, as the Scriptures are read and your Word proclaimed, we may hear with joy what you say to us today. Amen.

 Psalm 22:1-11 (OT, p. 679)

 My God! My God,
why have you left me all alone?
Why are you so far from saving me—
so far from my anguished groans?
2 My God, I cry out during the day,
but you don’t answer;
even at nighttime I don’t stop.
3 You are the holy one, enthroned.
You are Israel’s praise.
4 Our ancestors trusted you—
they trusted you and you rescued them;
5     they cried out to you and they were saved;
they trusted you and they weren’t ashamed.
6 But I’m just a worm, less than human;
insulted by one person, despised by another.
7 All who see me make fun of me—
they gape, shaking their heads:
8     “He committed himself to the Lord,
so let God rescue him;
let God deliver him
because God likes him so much.”
9 But you are the one who pulled me from the womb,
placing me safely at my mother’s breasts.
10 I was thrown on you from birth;
you’ve been my God
since I was in my mother’s womb.
11 Please don’t be far from me,
because trouble is near
and there’s no one to help.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

“Where Is God When I’m Suffering?”   The Rev. Justin Coleman

When the storms of life are raging, stand by me;
when the storms of life are raging, stand by me;
When the world is tossing me, like a ship upon the sea,
thou who rulest wind and water, stand by me.

In the midst of tribulation, stand by me;
in the midst of tribulation, stand by me;
When the host of hell assail, and my strength begins to fail,
thou who never lost a battle, stand by me.

In the midst of faults and failures, stand by me;
in the midst of faults and failures, stand by me;
When I’ve done the best I can, and my friends misunderstand,
thou who knowest all about me, stand by me.

In the midst of persecution, stand by me;
in the midst of persecution, stand by me;
When my foes in war array undertake to stop my way,
thou who saved Paul and Silas, stand by me.

Renunciation of Sin and Profession of Faith   Responsively

…Do you, as Christ’s body, the church, reaffirm both your rejection of sin and your commitment to Christ?
We do.
Will you nurture one another in the Christian faith and life and include Hans now before you in your care?
With God’s help we will proclaim the good news and live according to the example of Christ.
We will surround Hans with a community of love and forgiveness, that he may grow in his trust of God, and be found faithful in his service to others.
We will pray for him, that he may be a true disciple who walks in the way that leads to life.

Let us join together in professing the Christian faith as contained in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments.
Do you believe in God the Father?
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
Do you believe in Jesus Christ?
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and will come again to judge the living and the dead.
Do you believe in the Holy Spirit?
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Thanksgiving Over the Water
The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Let us pray.
… Their children you brought through the Jordan to the land which you promised.
Sing to the Lord, all the earth. Tell of God’s mercy each day.
… to make disciples of all nations.
Declare his works to the nations, his glory among all the people.
… with Christ, they may share in his final victory.
All praise to you, Eternal Father, through your Son Jesus Christ, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns forever. Amen.

Baptism with Laying on of Hands   Responsively
… Now it is our joy to welcome our new brother in Christ.
Through baptism, you are incorporated by the Holy Spirit into God’s new creation and made to share in Christ’s royal priesthood.
We are all one in Christ Jesus. With joy and thanksgiving we welcome you as a member of the family of Christ.

   Sung Response                 “Jesus Loves Me”                               Hymn 191
Jesus loves me! This I know, for the Bible tells me so.
Little ones to him belong; they are weak, but he is strong.
Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so.

Prayers of the People
The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray . . .
The congregation responds to each petition, “Hear our prayer.”

The Lord’s Prayer                                                                        In Unison
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

God is Good. All the time.
And all the time. God is Good.
