Women’s VOICES Choral Concert

January 21, 2018 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm

Women’s VOICE winter concert, Song of the Universal, will be on Sunday, January 21, 2018, at 3:00 p.m., at University United Methodist Church, 150 East Franklin Street, Chapel Hill.

Artistic Director Allan Friedman says that this concert “examines human potential: both the worst of humanity, which we can’t ignore if we are to do better, and the best of our natures, which gives us hope for the future.”

The title piece is a lush setting by Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo of a Walt Whitman poem, beautifully arranged above soaring violins and piano. In stark contrast to Whitman’s unabashed optimism is “Curse Upon Iron,” composer Veljo Tormis’s dark warning about the evils of war and unchecked technology. Rounding out the concert are works by Antonio Vivaldi,  Abbie Betinis and Gwyneth Walker. String orchestra will accompany the chorus on select songs.

Tickets are $7 for students and $17 for adults, and can be purchased at the door or online at www.womensvoiceschorus.org; group rates are available for parties of 10 or more. Free childcare will be provided at the concert, though space is limited. Send the names and ages of children needing care to .  Mention your University UMC affiliation at the ticket table to receive a discounted admission rate ($14 adult, $5 child/student).

Presenting programs of “fascinating diversity” with “a gorgeous sound” and “inspirational leadership,” Women’s Voices Chorus is the premier Triangle chorus for sopranos and altos. Its members perform a unique repertoire, bringing to life a wide range of choral music written by and for women. Deborah Hollis, Pianist.
