On Tuesday, August 28, more than 8,000 children and youth will return to school in Chapel Hill and Carrboro. Although the median household income in our area is $65,000, over 20% of our local population has family incomes below the poverty level of $24,600. This results in an increasing number of students being unable to afford basic supplies needed to learn, or even enough food to nourish them over the weekend.

University UMC will partner with several area schools to provide backpacks full of school supplies for deserving children. Specific lists for each grade are included on the reserve side of this insert. We have continued to expand our partnership with TABLE (www.tablenc.org), providing food for at least 50 children. TABLE estimates the cost to provide a week-end backpack to a child during the school year at $12/week for 43 weeks, or $516, or 500 pounds of food. You and your family may purchase any of the food items listed on the reverse side, in any quantity, and bring them in plastic grocery bags, along with your backpack of school supplies. Food we collect will stock the TABLE pantry for the start of the school year. Every amount helps.
